Boudoir photography is much more than a photoshoot. It’s a celebration—a reclaiming of confidence and love for one’s own body. But how did this empowering art form begin, and what makes it so transformative for women today?

What Is Boudoir?

It is an intimate, personal photography style focused on celebrating femininity and the beauty of all bodies. Through gentle, artistic poses and soft lighting, this style of photography aims to capture women in a way that honours their individuality, power, and vulnerability. Rather than just “taking pictures,” it creates a space where women can reconnect with themselves, see their unique beauty, and ultimately feel proud of the body they live in.

In photography, boudoir refers to an intimate style that captures the subject’s sensuality and self-confidence. The photography emphasises body positivity, self-love, and empowerment, helping people embrace their own beauty and strength. It often involves tasteful, artfully posed images in intimate settings, such as a bedroom or soft-lit studio, to create a comfortable environment for subjects to express themselves freely.

The Meaning Behind "Boudoir"

The term “boudoir” originates from the French word boudeur, which means “to sulk” or “to pout.” The word “boudoir” came to describe a woman’s private sitting room or bedroom—an intimate space that was exclusively hers. In essence, a boudoir photoshoot carries this same sense of private, personal expression. It’s a chance for each woman to step into her space, own her moment, and see herself in a beautiful new light.

when did they first appear?

Boudoir photography first appeared in the early 1900s as a form of portraiture that pushed traditional boundaries. Initially, the portraits were intended to be semi-private gifts—often for a spouse—and were sometimes regarded as scandalous. Back then, society’s view of a woman’s body was far more restrictive, and boudoir was sometimes stigmatized as a “risqué” form of photography. But today, we’ve redefined boudoir as a celebration of self. The modern approach is no longer about conforming to anyone else’s gaze. Instead, it’s about honouring yourself and embracing every detail that makes you unique.

Why Should You Have a Boudoir Photography Session?

Our bodies evolve through different seasons of life. For many women, these changes can impact confidence and self-esteem. Pregnancy, birth, weight changes, menopause, and ageing all bring physical changes that we may not have anticipated. Additionally, significant life changes—like relationship transitions or career shifts—can alter how we see ourselves. Body Confidence or Empowering (as I prefer to call them) photography sessions offer a unique opportunity to reconnect with your body in a loving, affirming way. Rather than focusing on what society says is “beautiful,” they celebrate each line, curve, and scar as a mark of the journey you’ve taken.

Boudoir through the ages

In the past these sessions were a daring act; today, it’s a brave, empowering one. Originally, these photos were often focused on a narrow, standardized idea of beauty. However, modern boudoir photography has shifted to represent the authenticity of each woman’s body and personality. Modern Body Confidence, or Empowerment Photoshoots welcomes women of all shapes, ages, and life experiences. It’s a beautiful way to witness the journey your body has been through and a chance to capture your strength, vulnerability, and resilience in a way that feels authentic to you.

History of Boudoir Photography Through the Ages

  1. 1920s-1940s: Early boudoir photography was influenced by silent film star portraits and vintage glamour shots. It often showcased women in lingerie or soft, flowing garments, with a focus on lighting and angles that conveyed softness and elegance.

  2. 1950s-1960s: Boudoir gained popularity with the rise of “pin-up” art, depicting women as flirtatious, fun, and confident. Marilyn Monroe and other icons of the era epitomized this, adding a playful, cheeky element to boudoir that helped normalise sensual photography.

  3. 1970s-1980s: With cultural shifts in self-expression and body positivity, boudoir styles became more daring. Photographers began experimenting with various styles, themes, and poses, embracing diversity in body types and personal styles.

  4. 1990s-Present: Boudoir photography became more widely accepted and accessible. The focus shifted from glamour and fantasy to authentic representation and empowerment. Modern boudoir embraces inclusivity, promoting body confidence for all shapes, sizes, and identities.

let's talk about female empowerment

These sessions aren’t about posing for a camera; it’s about reclaiming how you see yourself. During a session, you’re in control, and this moment is about you. Through each shot, you see your strength, your grace, and the way your body holds your unique story. This can be especially meaningful for women who may have struggled with body confidence or have faced pressures to conform to external beauty standards. Boudoir is a chance to silence those outside voices and to let yourself see your body through a kinder, more loving lens.

Imagine standing in front of the mirror, seeing yourself as beautiful and powerful, just as you are. It’s a feeling that stays with you, long after the session is over. That confidence doesn’t just live in the photos—it becomes part of your daily life. You’re not only empowered; you’re uplifted, connected to your inner strength, and filled with a renewed appreciation for the incredible journey your body has been on.
